Guide to April 2005 Rose Show Exibit Rules and Regulations for Entrees

DIVISION I - HORTICULTURE
DIVISION II - ARRANGEMENTS

DIVISION I - HORTICULTURE

RULES AND REGULATIONS

1.   EXHIBITORS
All entries must have been grown outdoors in the exhibitor's garden. No garden may be represented by more than one exhibitor. If desired, a couple may exhibit as a team. If the team option is elected, the individuals may not exhibit separately. Each person becoming an exhibitor agrees to conform to the rules and regulations governing the show.

2.   RESTRICTED CLASSES
Only in Section A (specified classes), P, Q and Z is competition restricted. Restrictions are listed in these sections. Competition in all other Sections is open to all exhibitors. In specified classes of Section A exhibitors must have been a member of Thomasville Rose Society since April of the previous year and must have attended at least 50% of last year's meetings.

3.   ENTRIES
Entries will be accepted only between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 22, 2005. All rose varieties will be arranged alphabetically within a class. Entry tags must be completed to include Section, Class, Variety and Exhibitor's Name and Address. All entries must be exhibited by the American Rose Society (ARS) exhibition name. ENTRY TAGS MUST BE WRITTEN IN PENCIL. NO INK WILL BE ALLOWED. Address labels may be used.
The Show Committee will provide uniform containers. Exhibitors should use these containers unless specified otherwise in the schedule. English Boxes, Double English Boxes (Thomasville Boxes), Miniature English Boxes, Painter's Palettes, Miniature Painter's Palettes, Brandy Snifters, Miniature Brandy Snifters, Frames and Miniature Frames will be available on a first come basis. An exhibitor may make as many entries as desired provided each rose is a different variety except in Classes that are restricted to one entry per exhibitor. Only roses, except seedlings, may be entered in competition that are described in Modern Roses, Official List of Approved Exhibition Names for Exhibitors and Judges, Handbook for Selecting Roses, The Rose Registration column of the American Rose magazine and recent Rose Registrations on the ARS website. In cases where a variety is not listed in any of the above ARS official publications, the Combined Rose List (CRL) may be used as a reference. If differences exist between the CRL and ARS publications, the ARS publication will prevail.
Stem length and foliage should bear a pleasing relation to the size of the bloom. One-bloom-per-stem specimens must be exhibited with no side buds. Other specimens should be shown naturally grown or disbudded. An exhibitor may remove unwanted growth subject to penalization. Climbing specimens that have a bush counterpart must be exhibited in the appropriate classes for their bush counterparts. All spray specimens must have two or more blooms, exhibited at exhibition stage or most perfect stage of beauty according to variety and may include additional buds and blooms in all stages or in same stage of development. Roses that are classified as mini-flora should be exhibited in miniature classes. Seedlings must be exhibited by the amateur hybridizer and classified as to the type and the cross or crosses, which should be shown on the reverse side of the entry tag. The use of a wedge to position a specimen in the container is permitted. The wedge should not extend above the top of the container. Stems should be inserted a minimum of three (3) inches into the container with the exception of miniatures.
The classification committee may refuse to accept any entry which is not of show quality. Entries may be disqualified for the following reasons:
  1. Misnamed, misclassed, misplaced, unlabeled or mislabeled.
  2. Stem on stem, a specimen exhibited with a portion of the previous stem growth attached. Exception: Species, Old Garden Roses and Shrubs may be shown stem on stem.
  3. Presence of foreign substance applied to the foliage, stem or bloom to improve the appearance of the specimen.
  4. Not disbudded. Any class calling for one bloom per stem specimens must be exhibited without side buds. A side bud is defined as growth emanating from a leaf axil having sufficient maturity to display the formation of a stem with or without flower buds. The presence of one or two leaflets or leaves at the leaf axil with no evidence of a stem is cause for penalization but not disqualification.
  5. An entry in violation of ARS rules or local society rules applying to this show. Separate entries from the same garden by two or more exhibitors will disqualify all their entries (except in the Judges' class). Two entries of the same variety by the same exhibitor in the same class will disqualify both entries.
Disqualified exhibits receive no awards.
All roses entered in the show become the property of the Show Committee. Wilted roses will be removed from the show tables. Entries will be presented to the Classification Committee. Exhibitors may not withdraw entries that have been accepted by the Classification Committee. The Placement Committee will place entries on show tables. Exhibitors place entries in the challenge classes.
